Global Corn and Soybean Outlook for 2023/24 Season

The global agricultural landscape is poised for significant shifts in the upcoming 2023/24 season, with projections indicating notable developments in corn and soybean production, trade, and stockpiles. Let's delve into the details:

Corn Production and Trade

World corn production is anticipated to surge to 1235.7 million tons (Mt), marking a robust 6.9% increase from the previous season. Key players in this surge include the United States, expecting a 12.4% uptick, and the European Union, projecting a substantial 14.7% rise. However, Brazil's production is slated to dip by 5.8%, contrasting sharply with Argentina's impressive 61.8% surge.

In the export domain, the United States is set to maintain its stronghold as the second-largest exporter, with a projected 26.4% increase in exports. Notably, South America, led by Argentina, is expected to significantly boost its exportable supply, even as Brazil faces a slight decrease.

Meanwhile, China's corn imports are poised to rise by 22.9%, underscoring the country's increasing demand for this staple grain. The European Union's import volume is also expected to see a modest uptick.

Ending stocks are forecasted to grow by 8.2% globally, with the United States witnessing a notable increase while Brazil experiences a decline.

Soybean Production and Trade

Soybean production is anticipated to see a moderate 6.3% increase globally, with Argentina leading the pack with a staggering 100.0% surge. However, Brazil's production is expected to decrease slightly.

In terms of exports, Brazil is projected to maintain its dominance, with a modest increase, while the United States faces a slight decrease in export volume. Argentina, too, is expected to ramp up its export activity.

On the import front, China continues to play a pivotal role, with a marginal 1.1% increase in soybean imports compared to the previous season.

Ending stocks for soybeans are forecasted to grow by 12.5% globally, buoyed by increases in stocks in Argentina, China, and Brazil.

Conclusion

The outlook for the 2023/24 season suggests dynamic shifts in global corn and soybean production, trade, and stockpiles. While the United States maintains its position as a key player in corn exports, South America, particularly Argentina, emerges as a significant contributor to global supply. Similarly, Brazil remains a dominant force in soybean exports, alongside Argentina. With evolving trade dynamics and shifting production patterns, stakeholders in the agricultural sector must adapt strategically to harness opportunities and mitigate risks in the upcoming season.
